Sustainability is at the very heart of everything we do and we’re passionate about creating delicious, high-quality food and drink while nurturing our planet. From the fields where our oats are grown to your kitchen table, we’re committed to making every step of the journey as eco-friendly as possible.
Let us share with you the ways we’re working to make a difference, one bowl of porridge and an oat latte at a time!
Homegrown and proud
Did you know that all of our oats are sown, grown and milled right here in Cambridgeshire? Our oats are grown across 100,000 acres on our family Cambridgeshire oat farm, and we also work closely with local farmers within a 70-mile radius to ensure high quality and keep our food miles as low as possible. This local approach not only supports our community but also significantly reduces transportation emissions.
Sustainable farming practices
We’re proud to support our local Cambridgeshire farmers, working together on eco-friendly farming practices that are good for both our crops and the planet. From improving organic matter in the soil to boost water retention – especially important for spring crops facing drier seasons – to trialling innovative methods like parallel cropping and planting winter cover crops, we’re always looking ahead.
We plant cover crops to stop nitrates from leaching into the soil – especially on fallow fields. This helps protect local water sources and supports healthier, more balanced ecosystems. And of course, we’re proud to say that our farming methods encourage wildlife to thrive, from bees and butterflies to birds and beyond.
Innovative on-site production
Our commitment to sustainability goes far beyond the fields. Our farm is powered by renewable energy sources, including solar panels and biomass generators. We utilise oat by-products like inedible oat chaff to generate energy that powers our production facilities, ensuring nothing goes to waste! In 2023, we also made a significant investment in a state-of-the-art Tetra Pak plant. This advancement has allowed us to process and package all our products, from oat milks to porridge oats and granolas on-site, meaning it’s only a mere 150 metres between milling and packing, eliminating up to 100,000 miles of HGV transport, further shrinking our carbon footprint!
Leading the way with low carbon footprint
Independent assessments by MyEmissions have shown that our PureOaty range has a super low carbon footprint.
Our PureOaty Barista and Tea-riffic oat drinks produce only 0.26kg of Co2e per litre – that’s 50% lower than any of the leading oat drink brands and 78% lower than dairy milk. This makes PureOaty the oat drink with the lowest carbon footprint on the UK market! Now that’s something we’re very proud of.
While our PureOaty Porridge achieved a score of just 0.18 kg Co2e per pack of porridge (with organic porridge scoring an even lower score of 0.10kg Co2e per pack), and 0.28 kg Co2e per pack of PureOaty Granola. In comparison, the industry average stands at 0.67kg Co2e per pack for porridge and 1.13kg Co2e per pack for granola.
Producing our PureOaty range generates a fraction of the greenhouse gas emissions compared to traditional dairy milk and it’s all about how small choices, like switching to plant-based, can add up to a big impact. Want to find out more about our sustainability initiatives, read more here.
